Draga Dejanović was born in Stara Kanjiža in 1840. She began her education in Timisoara and continued in Pest. After a failed marriage in 1862, she tried her hand at the ensemble of the Serbian National Theater in Novi Sad. Still, she did not have any notable success, unlike in poetry. She soon left for Belgrade, where she remained until 1864. After leaving Belgrade, she worked in Stari Bečej as a teacher. She died at childbirth at the age of 31.
Interesting facts (Storytelling):
She also published under the pseudonym Draga D-ća. Because of her views on the position of women in society, she was rightly called “the first Serbian feminist”. “I’m a woman, but I can” is Draga’s verse remembered as a slogan that depicts her views on the necessity of fighting for women’s rights and overthrowing male supremacy in the community.
