Lenka Dunđerski

Lenka Dunđerski, the daughter of a great producer, grain merchant and benefactor, Lazar Dunđerski, was a polyglot and a passionate traveler and a great inspiration to the famous poet Laza Kostić.
Short biography:
Jelena “Lenka” Dunđerski was born in Srbobran. She was the pride of her family, both because of her beauty and her education. Lenka was educated at the Lyceum for English Ladies in Pest and the Higher Education Institute in Vienna. Lenka and Laza Kostić first met in 1891 in Čelarevo, when she was only 21 and he 50. Over the next four years, they often spent time together. Despite the age difference, love was born, but Kostić decided to withdraw. Lenka died suddenly from typhus in 1895 in Vienna on her 25th birthday. She was not married and had no children. She was buried in Srbobran, in the crypt in the family chapel.

Jelena Dunđerski was the love and inspiration of the great Serbian poet Laza Kostić, who dedicated the poem Santa Maria della Salute to her.
The Lenka’s Ring literary award for the best love poem was established in 2006.
