Melanija Bugarinović was a famous Serbian opera singer. She was the first Serbian woman with a permanent engagement at the Vienna Opera.

Short biography:

Melanija Bugarinović sang in the church in her hometown from an early age. She studied music school in Timisoara when she married and gave birth to a daughter, Mirjana, who later also became a famous opera singer. Melanija came to Belgrade in 1930, where she got the leading roles in operas. She was engaged in the Opera of the National Theater in Belgrade on two occasions. In 1937 she went to Vienna. She performed in Germany, Spain, Czechoslovakia, Italy, France, the USSR, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Asia and Africa. She withdrew from public life in 1968. In 1978, she started a fund for the promotion of vocal arts of the young in Novi Sad. Melanija Bugarinović died in 1986.
