Contributions to culture and science
She was awarded with Bronze medal at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Teams’ Gymnastics. In the same year, she joined the Hungarian national team. Over 35 years, she taught in the High-School of Kecskemét, and, before that, at the Kecskemét Teachers’ School of the Reformed Church, teaching many enthusiastic students interested in sports and physical education. Alongside, she worked as a coach, helping many raising talents in reaching their goals. She dedicated her life for the city of Kecskemét, for sports and its teaching, this way enjoyed an overall respect in her direction. While she was still alive, the Sports Hall of Keckemét High School was named after her, saluting her long and prosperous work.
Short biography
Born in Debrecen, she was the second child of teacher of folk school Károly Törös and Olga Bugyi. From 1928 to 1934, she studied at the Institution of Teachers of Debrecen’s Dócz Girls’ School of the Reformed Church, where she gained a degree in teaching. At this time, she started doing sports at the Debrecen Gymnastics Club, but the new year she continued her studies at Sports College, thus she proceeded with her professional sports at its Sports Club.
She was awarded with bronze medal at the 1936 Summer Olympic Games in teams’ gymnastics and made it to the Hungarian national team.
In 1939, after finishing her studies at college, she returned to Debrecen where she worked as a coach, then, in the same year, she moved to Kecskemét, where she worked at the Teachers’ School of the Reformed Church, then she was a teacher of Physical Education at the Teacher College for 35 years. The Sports Hall of Kecskemét High School was named after her in 2011.
Interesting facts
In 2011, she received the Award for Women’s Lifestyle of the Hungarian Olympics Committee. The Award has been given out since 2002, thus only a handful have been decorated with it.
In 2014, she was made Honorary Citizen of the city of Kecskemét, then, in the same year, she was awarded with the Honour of Immortals of Hungarian gymnastics.
