Route concept

The concept of the route, sites and places on the route are defined based on the following elements:

  1. Studies on famous women in culture and science in the cross-border area of Serbia and Hungary were carried out for the project’s needs. These studies contain data on mapping influential women in the cross-border region of Serbia and Hungary, with details of their lives and work, interesting facts and biographies, and a list of places and cultural heritage associated with these women.
  2. The geographical criterion was used because the goal was to cover the cross-border area as evenly as possible for tourists to get a better picture of the region and at the same time enable equal distribution of potential benefits from the cultural-tourist route.

Basically, each famous woman was observed through the primary location on the route. For objective reasons, many prominent women were tied to larger settlements with the most attractive power (with Novi Sad and Szeged being the most important ones). Still, the studies also included smaller places related to these famous women’s birth, life, and work.

Cultural and tourist route “Famous women in culture and science” can be divided into:

  • The main route, encompassing the heritage of six towns in Serbia (Novi Sad, Sombor and Subotica) and in Hungary (Szeged, Kecskemét and Mako)
  • An additional route for tourists looking for an enriched experience and more extended travel and exploration. This additional route includes the heritage of smaller places outside the key six points:
  • Birth house of Isidora Sekulić in Mošorin.
  • Gallery of Naive Art in Kovačica (Zuzana Chalupová).
  • Dunđerski Castle (Kaštel Castle) in Kulpin (Lenka Dunđerski).
